Where to stay in Phuket

As travel bloggers we are often asked the question “Where is the best area to stay in Phuket?”

Of course there isn’t a ‘right’ answer.  Each area of the island has its own unique characteristics and it really depends on how long you have to visit and the type of holiday you are planning – whether it be an fun packed Phuket family holiday or a romantic break for a couple.

We have picked out the main destinations below and hope to give a flavour of the experience for each to help decide where to stay in Phuket.  If you are still confused, don’t worry too much – Phuket isn’t a large island so no matter where you choose to stay will never be far from some amazing places to discover.

Thalang District

The quieter northern district is home to rainforests, hills, and the Sirinath National Park and Nai Yang beach where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.  If you want to find out more about the sea turtles and their conservations you can read up on the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation website.  This area is ideal for those seeking a quieter more remote getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the western beaches.

Naithon Beach

Alongside Nai Yan Beach the little known Naithon Beach has escaped developers and is surrounded by the stunning backdrop of Sirinath National Park.  The combination of cool turquoise waters and shady trees,  overhanging a wide stretches of incredible white sand,  means there is plenty of space to kick back and relax whether you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family looking for a bit of down time.

If you do feel like exploring, why not take a long tailed boat ride to the rocky coves nearby or visit one of the dive shops located on the Beach Road and hire some snorkelling kit or book a scuba dive.

Layan Beach / Bang Tao Beach

Divided by a small lagoon the smaller and less developed Layan Beach lies to the north whilst to the south is Bang Tao Beach one of Phuket’s longest beaches. Layan Beach has seen few changes in the last 20 years making it a firm favourite with both Thai locals and expats.  With a mixture of cafes, good restaurants, perfect snorkelling spots and super easy access, what isn’t there to like?

Bang Tao Beach is the perfect place if you like long relaxing beach walks with restaurants and simple local stalls dotted along the way to provide a welcome stop off for either a cool refreshing drink or a fantastic Thai meal.  Make sure you take note of any red flags on the beach from May to October as waves can be larger and more dangerous then.

The Park Surin

Allamanda Laguna

Both offer a perfect accommodation choice if you want to explore this area.

Surin Beach

Surin Beach is known for sophistication and beauty.  With white sands and turquoise water it is very picturesque and has long been popular with those seeking a truly luxurious experience.  Many refer to it as one Phuket’s best beaches.

Kathu District

Located on the central western side of the island Kathu is the smallest district on Phuket and includes the tourist resorts of Patong and Kamala Beach

Kamala

Of all the western beaches Kamala is one of the quietest yet still offers everything you want from a holiday destination.  The stunning two kilometre clear water beach is more peaceful towards the north and busier along the central stretch and as such there is something for everyone.     Surrounded by thick forests it is a truly stunning location and a great base to explore the rest of Phuket.

Patong

Known as the party resort - Patong is buzzing and you will never be short of things to do.  Hit the beach and you will find jet skis, parasailing and a host of water sports to keep you occupied. Take a short walk back from Patong beach and you will find bars, clubs, restaurants, food stalls, Thai boxing and an air conditioned shopping mall with a 4D cinema to entertain.   Despite this Patong is still remarkably beautiful with golden sand, clear shallow waters and perfect sunsets.  Definitely one of the best areas to experience if you like the party scene and Phuket nightlife!

Mueang District

An interesting alternative to the westerly resorts Mueang District offers a variety of options - from the wide bay of Chalong, to the hustle and bustle of Phuket City, the region is home to a wide variety of superb beaches often separated by rocky capes.  To the far south you will find Prom Thep Cape viewpoint which is the place to capture the best views and see the most incredible sunsets.  Make sure you visit on a clear day and don’t forget your camera!

Karon

If you are looking for a quieter more relaxing alternative to Patong, Karon has a beautiful three kilometre sandy beach and a variety of restaurants and smaller food stalls to suit all tastes.  You are still only a 15 minute car journey away from the attractions of Patong and the Phuket nightlife.  Head 10 minutes south and you will reach Chalong with some of the best seafood Phuket has to offer.

Chalong

Chalong Bay on the southeast side of the island is a natural spot for mooring boats and as such is a perfect location if you are a keen diver or wish to take fishing or boat trips.  All of these depart from the main feature of the bay which is the 720m long jetty which can be a bit of an adventure itself.   Take the tourists bus to the end or just enjoy the stroll and simply watch the boats come and go.  Find fishing boats in Thailand and you’ll find the best seafood restaurants and Chalong is no different, simply head to the waterfront for wonderful food at very reasonable prices.

Please be aware that the shoreline is muddy so it isn’t the best place if you are looking for a beach to relax on.  Why not visit at sunset for some great photo opportunities followed by some truly authentic Thai food.

Sometimes called Phuket Town the administrative centre for the island has recently been upgraded to a city and is the main business district for the island.  A charming place where monks still walk the same streets as evening night clubbers, Phuket City is where to stay in Phuket if you want to explore the island or even to go island hopping.
